Everything Is Broken playlist for 01/31/2012

Our featured guest is Mike Nastro – Mike owns and manages Fairview Pharmacy which began as a division of St. Charles Hospital in 1995. Mike purchased the business from St Charles in early 2002 and moved to their current location on Nesconset Hwy in Port Jefferson Station.

As a small business owner, in an industry dominated by large retail pharmacy chains, Mike can give us insight into not only the complexity of running pharmacies in today’s medicated world, but also shed some light on the economy and its effects on small businesses in our communities.

Mike and I will discuss the current security crisis that retail pharmacies face in an era of runaway prescription drug addiction that has resulted in an ongoing high profile crime spree. Suffolk County’s most heinous mass murder occurred late last year in a nearby Medford owner-operated pharmacy.

And … our pal STEVE WIEHE will check in from Florida to give us his take on current events.

For music today … Robben Ford – blues; jazz-fusion and rock guitarist.

Whatever Floats Yer Boat playlist for 01/27/2012

I posted the following note on Facebook and the radio station staff list:
“As many of you know, I have a light hearted radio show, Whatever Floats Yer Boat on WUSB Stony Brook. Tomorrow morning is not going to be a light hearted show. I'll be featuring a discussion with a couple of people who are currently, locally, grappling with the substance abuse epidemic that has been crippling our young people. Tune in 90.1fm in the Stony Brook listening area, or listen online wusb.fm. If anyone has any comment, questions or constructive contributions to the discussion, please post them here.”
The feedback on this program has been overwhelming. I compiled it (de-identified, of course) and am posting it here along with my playlist and a link to the streaming archive.
The following are the de-identified comments collected from a variety of sources. To protect privacy, I’ve removed or obscured names, so sometimes the flow sounds a little clunky. Thanks to everyone who listened and commented.
