Zamyia Rhaburn: IntroHello wonderful readers! My name is Zamyia Rhaburn. I am a junior majoring in English, with a creative writing & literature minor. I am also a student assistant for student media services in SAC 225, and the English department in the Humanities 2076. I was honored to have interviewed the student leaders at the WUSB Radio station located on campus! They were asked about themselves, their role at WUSB, their day-to-day, what makes them stand out from their peers, and whether they host a show. I hope you enjoy learning more about the people who make it all happen as much as I did!
Jaida RamachandranTitle/Position - Music Director/VP My name is Jaida Ramachandran and I am the Vice President and Music Director at WUSB! I have been a member of WUSB since the Fall of 2021. My day can differ from day to day, but on my busiest day, I start the day off with my show at 12 pm until 1 pm. Then I hold music check-in at the radio station where we listen to the music that gets sent in. I usually then connect with the members there, take a break, and then come back for the event that we had that day. This is usually a student takeover or an album-listening party. I have always enjoyed music and I was interested in getting to listen to new music in different genres. Last semester, I decided that I wanted to be more involved so I submitted an application to be on the e-board. I have loved my position so far! Something that makes me stand out from my peers is that during the summer I work with kids at an overnight summer camp and plan to work with kids once I graduate! I host a radio show on Fridays from 12 pm to 1 pm! Lately, during my shows I have been doing a history of genres, for the past few I have done shows on each part of the emo genre, starting from the late 90s until now!
Isabella JanowiczTitle/Position - Treasurer My name is Isabella Janowicz, Biology BS. I'm the business manager and treasurer at WUSB. I have been a part of the radio station since the beginning of my sophomore year, so for about a year now. I became more involved after meeting some of the other WUSB members at a house show around halloween last year. As a part of e-board we work together to throw different events on campus, whether that be our weekly GBM, mini student on air takeovers, radiothon, The Bash, etc. Every week we have a GBM for our members where we play fun games and update members on new info in regards to different events-- this week we have an info training session on how to use the program software Audacity! Typically at the station if I am not on air I am helping our music director check in new music, organizing music, reaching out to businesses and record labels for future collaborations, and hanging out with our members forming new connections over our shared love for music! I was looking to have a more active role in the radio station. Being close with Matt, our program director, I got to see what he did in his role as business manager and decided to take on this role from him. I am very thankful for all his help in adjusting to the new role! Something that makes me unique is that I love going to house shows and participating in the local music scene by supporting small bands on my radio show. This past summer I also started to take lessons for the guitar, I especially love to play Joyce Manor songs! I host a radio show on Wednesdays from 4-5pm called Sore Ears! This is my first semester having the show and I'm having so much fun with it. I mainly play emo and indie rock music, but lately every week I have been playing a different genre on my show! I love how my show gives me an outlet to express my thoughts on different music genres, scenes, and new releases. Public health is also very important to me and I hope to be able to complete some training alongside the work I do as a writer for the Humanology project, an organization that works on reducing stigma surrounding mental and neurological conditions, and start incorporating it into my show.
Joselynn CruzTitle/Position: Secretary My name is Joselynn Cruz, my major is Psychology and my role at WUSB is secretary. I only joined WUSB a semester ago!I don't really have a day-to-day or have a show but, when we have recess on Wednesdays I love playing music on air and talking with everyone there. It's exciting to talk to people with similar interests! I wanted to become a secretary because I wanted to be more involved with the club. I feel what makes me stand out is that I'm proud to be a woman of color in the Latinx community in a white dominated male space, in which I'm happy to work with other women of color! Also I love music - I love to collect vinyl and cds! I play cello as well and picked up playing bass guitar last summer! Some of my favorite things to play on my bass are from Talking Heads and Nirvana! I don’t have a radio show, sadly, but I would love to get one next semester!
