SPORTS AND POLITICS!! Today’s featured guest is Dave Zirin. Named one of The Utne Reader’s “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Our World”, Dave Zirin writes about the politics of sports for the Nation Magazine - he is their first sports writer in their 150 years of existence. Zirin is also the host of Sirius XM Radio’s popular weekly show, Edge of Sports Radio. He has been called “the best sportswriter in the United States,” by Robert Lipsyte. Dave Zirin is, in addition, a columnist for SLAM Magazine and the Progressive. His most recent book, in collaboration with John Carlos, is "The John Carlos Story", published by Haymarket Books. Zirin and Carlos are touring throughout 2012 promoting their work. Also joining us today is Lauren Carmichael of Move to Amend Brookhaven. She will give us a local update to the national effort to repeal the Supremes' catastrophic Citizens United decision resulting in a flood of influence buying cash from “citizen” corporations. And … our pal Steven Wiehe will check in from the road upstate with his take on current events. For music today … from Chris Hillman, an original member of The Byrds, also formed the Desert Rose Band, and was with the Flying Burrito Brothers. We will listen to some cuts from the live album “At Edward’s Barn” with his long time collaborator Herb Peterson. |
