This Sunday from 12–5 a.m., Melting World takes a mind-melting journey through the genre known as fusion.

Emerging in the late 1960s, fusion brought electric instruments, rock rhythms and studio experimentation into jazz. Over time, the genre expanded even further, drawing composers, musicians and sounds from across the musical spectrum.

We’ll explore the beginnings and evolution of this largely instrumental, virtuoso music with selections from Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, Bill Laswell & Tony Williams, Matteo Mancuso, Jonas Hellborg & Shawn Lane, Brand X, David Torn, Jean-Luc Ponty, TEAR, PAKT and many more.

Then, during the Cosmic Hour, we’ll present Bang on a Can’s reimagining of Terry Riley’s landmark minimalist work, In C.

This episode features a variety of music, student performances, cultural presentations, and classical recitations from the Stony Brook community.

In the Special Topic segment, hosts Charles Liu, Michael Wang, and Alex Yu explore different music genres and share a carefully selected playlist, featuring classical piano and dizi music.

The program also presents winning entries from the Stony Brook Chinese Culture and Language Speech Contest, including Weighing the Elephant by Manji Zhang, Wukong Wreaks Havoc in Heaven by Xiangrui Wang, and A Day Trip to Death Valley by Xinyuan Zheng.

In Stony Brook Voices, listeners will enjoy vocal performances by Charles Liu, Nancy Ho, the Stony Brook Youth Chorus, and Xinrui Gu, as well as Vittoria, mio core! performed by Charles Liu.

The program also features a classical recitation of Summer Day Quatrain, led by Teacher Jin Liu, with Sailin Zhang and Zhelin Zhang, followed by instrumental performances on violin and guitar in our Stony Brook Music segment.

As part of the Robin's Nest's summer series celebrating legendary bands of the ’60s and ’70s still going strong after more than five decades, Rockin' Robin will be joined by Roger Earl, founding drummer of Foghat and former drummer for Savoy Brown.

Roger has been the one constant member of Foghat for more than 50 years, and he’ll stop by the WUSB studios between dates on the band’s busy touring schedule.

WUSB’s Sunday Street Series welcomes legendary blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Rory Block to The Long Island Museum on Sunday, October 4 at 5 p.m.

Known for her powerful, authentic interpretations of traditional country blues—as well as her own original compositions—Block has built a celebrated career carrying the music’s rich traditions forward for new generations of listeners.

This Thursday at 4 p.m., join Captain Phil’s Planet for a special conversation with Steve Hackett and Steve Rothery as they preview their new collaborative album, The Roaring Waves.

Eight years in the making, the album brings the two acclaimed guitarists together for something Hackett describes as less traditionally progressive and more “cinematic” and atmospheric.

The project came together gradually between touring and other commitments, with sessions at the Racket Club and their home studios. Rothery describes the process as refreshingly old-school—two friends getting together, playing and seeing where the music takes them.
