Interviews With Bill Shelly and Cindy Campbel about The Tina Tuner Tribute at The Cinema Arts Centre June 28th at 7:30.TINA TURNER MEMORIAL CELEBRATION
Wednesday, June 28th at 7:30 PM

Join for an evening of rare and thrilling performance films in honor of the late Tina Turner (November 26 1939 - May 24, 2023), the musical legend who is often referred to as “The Queen of Rock and Roll.” Coming from a gospel background in rural Nutbush, Tennessee, she soon found herself as the lead singer of Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm. The group established themselves as a popular live act, and had a hit with the song, “Poor Fool.” With sudden fame came marriage to Ike Turner, along with a brutal and often violent relationship. The 1960s were a successful time for Ike and Tina, with appearances on popular television shows like Shindig and Soul Train, records produced by producer Phil Spector, and concert tours with The Rolling Stones.

The 1970s found the couples international fame starting to fade, as rock and roll styles changed. Ike Turner’s massive ego and physical abuse caused final destruction to the marriage and Tina walked out. Alone with no money, Tina found her life without a musical future and on welfare. With the support of true friends like Cher, Elton John, Mick Jagger and Aretha Franklin among others, Tina started to make a comeback.

As her life and luck changed, she found a renewed faith as a Buddhist follower, which brought her peace and joy. A new relationship with producer/manager Irwin Bach, plus a new record contract skyrocketed her back to fame with “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” and “Private Dancer.” Tina also found a passion for acting in such movies as Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Tommy (1975), The Last Action Hero (1993) among others. Hollywood made her life story into the highly successful movie “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” (1993) starring the award-winning Angela Bassett.

Tina Turner was a multiple Grammy Winner, Kennedy Center Honoree, NAACP Image Award Winner, MTV Video Music Award Winner, Billboard and Tony Awards, amongst many others. Tina has sold more than 100 million records and was the first female black artist to be on the cover of Rolling Stone. In 2018 she became established in the outstanding Broadway production “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical”.

Tina passed on May 24th 2023 at the age of 83.
