Intercollegiate Broadcasting System ConferenceBy Eileen Escobedo During the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference there were various workshops that allowed my co-workers and I to indulge into the richness that WUSB and the Student Media area has to offer. One workshop that stood out to me was entitled " Women in Media". The presenters, Annie and Sue Aller, each had different experiences in media, which impacted they way they defined “living their life”. One of the presenters expressed the hardships of being a woman in the media, since it is such an indulging career that can be all-consuming. She discussed the challenges she faced taking a break from work to have a child. She expressed the realities of the field- no matter how passionate or how hard you work, job stability and security can not be assumed. The other presenter, who had a one child, followed by triplets, all on the heels of the tragedy of 9/11, continued working while expanding her family. She referenced the importance of building a balanced routine and involving your personal life in your work world, where possible. Both stories were equally moving and thought provoking. All in all, their advice to women in media was to have a plan and not to let a job get in the way of building the personal life that is important to you; find the job that lets you have it all. |
