Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference

By Stanley Brackett

The Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference hosted a plethora of seminars that spanned from ways to improving radio stations that are student-run, to a seminar that had a band performing their music in front of the patrons that were attending the event. However, there was one seminar that all of the radio representatives attended, at which Mike McVay was presenting. Mike McVay is the president of the McVay Media and is a 40-year programmer in radio with a wide range of roles in management, ownership, sales, and on-air experience with radio. He presented on proven strategies to operate successful college and professional radio stations. He emphasized how important it is to know what your job is and own it, to listen to your audience, to do what you know best and to not hold off on implementing good ideas ("don’t save it for later.") Those pieces of advice stuck with me since the WUSB radio station can experience even greater successes by applying what we already know, using the strengths of our team, and taking them to the next level.
