On Air

From the Eyes of an Intern

by Shaina Molow

My history with WUSB goes far back as to when I was a kid. My father would take me up to the station in the old union on campus. I would be mesmerized by all of the work he did. He usually engineered for sporting events for the university- sometimes he would let me speak on the air. After being introduced at such a young age, I always knew I wanted to give back to a place that introduced me to my interests in broadcasting, media, and performance.

Many years later when I became a student at Stony Brook, I became a volunteer, and soon enough an intern. Having a learning experience with WUSB has by far been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever participated in. I’ve learned so much about radio and media, improved my time management skills, and have made a lot of great connections and friendships. The community at WUSB is wonderful and full of support.

Being an intern at WUSB is more than what some may think: organizing papers and music all day in a dark backroom, or writing quarterly reports to the FCC. While some days may include that, there’s still a lot of fun things to do. My favorite things to do as an intern are running my mouth live on the radio, recording announcements, helping the WUSB community, and improving the quality of the station.

I’ve been given many different tasks throughout the past few months, whether it be tabling in the Student Activities Center or organizing spreadsheets for charity events. There would always be something to learn, whether it be patience or improving my skills in Excel. A proverb I like to live by is “The minute you stop learning, you stop growing”.

Interning has brought out my most charitable parts, it all comes natural to me. I help others and ask for nothing in return because it’s the right thing to do. I’ve done my best to apply that throughout my time with WUSB because it’s exactly what WUSB has done for me- it introduced me to a world of broadcasting and media which is now something I am passionate about. It feels right to give back to such a lovely community.
