WUSB Sports

There is no better place for sports news on Long Island than tuning in to the WUSB Sports section. I was proud to represent WUSB FM as a broadcaster and co-host of ‘WUSB Sports’ this year. The station was the most accessible way for me to cover Stony Brook Football, Basketball and Lacrosse games. I was able to build my broadcast skills by covering games and reporting profile stories on the program’s best athletes. I was able to interview Stony Brook greats including Ally Kennedy, Elijah Olaniyi, India
Pagan, and Joe Spallina for our radio show. I also enjoy the station’s flexibility with working in different roles. I called sports games, worked on the board to ensure the audio was airing, co-hosted a show every Sunday night and reported Stony Brook news every Friday afternoon on Campus Connect.

This station is a family. I was worried about fitting in as the section’s lone underclassman. However, Jim, Matt, Zach and myself have created so many fun memories and experiences through working at WUSB. They helped me gain experience reporting out-of-state. I was able to visit and call football games in Delaware, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania for the first time in my life, alongside them. My favorite part was knowing my friends and family on and off campus were listening. I shared many of my experiences there with my friends on campus, and they enjoyed saying they “were friends with the Stony Brook Sports broadcaster.” Several even told me they heard me calling basketball while they were taking the bus home from their night-class.

Working in WUSB has given me tools to use across other journalism mediums. I have transitioned easier with providing commentary for America East TV, and was inspired by ‘WUSB Sports’ to start a show called ‘Stony Brook Sportsbreak,’ airing on Stony Brook Journalism’s Youtube channel.
