Moving Day & Last Show for 2016.

Selected The Band's Opus - The Last Waltz - for this broadcast as a final selection to the last edition of Fermented Radio for 2016 . I selected this recording for today's show for a few reasons. This past Thanksgiving marked the 40th anniversary of the concert (11/25/1976). A 40th Anniversary is justification enough for playing these records today. But then I began to replay 2016 in my head; it occurred to me that it has been a pretty horrible year with respect to the passing of many of our music idols, and of course the end of a miserable presidential election cycle. Musically this recording is the 3-LP soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese directed movie, "The Last Waltz". Live at The Winterland Arena this document serves as a time capsule for one our most significant performing acts: The Band. Joined by a superstar lineup of their 'Friends" this has been called the greatest Concert Movie of all time. The sum total of the event, performance and spirit of community that this album transmits is a fitting tribute to the place where WUSB has been radiating it's stereo signal since June 27, 1978. For the past 38 and a half years we have been housed in Room 240 on the second floor of the Student Union. As we forge ahead to 2017 both as a radio station and community, change is underway. WUSB heads across campus to a new studio, truly a new beginning a bright future to a place where creative exploration will continue the experiment.
