American writer, director and actor, Douglas McGrath, will be Tom Needham's special guest this Thursday at 6 PM on the Sounds of Film. They will be discussing his appearance in PBS' American Masters - Carole King: Natural Woman.
Also on the program is hip-hop legend DJ Kool Herc, who will be part of the Cinema Arts Centre's Black History Month festivities on Friday, February 19, at 9:30 PM.

Can free-markets properly organize society? This writer says no. This writer also states that self-regulating markets are a Utopian fantasy. This man, by the way, is Karl Polanyi (and, as I discover during the show, the 'y' is silent). Polanyi's critique of free-market fundamentalism can provide some powerful insights into why free-markets are essentially flawed, and why our concept of 'freedom' needs to be re-evaluated.

Hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow will be Tom Needham's special guest this Thursday at 6 P.M. on The Sounds of Film Show on WUSB 90.1 FM. They will be discussing his upcoming induction into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame in April. Kurtis Blow is well known for his classic songs "Christmas Rappin'," "The Breaks," "Basketball," and "If I Ruled the World." He was the first commercially successful rapper who was signed to a major record deal. Throughout his career, he released 15 albums. He also starred in the popular film, Krush Groove, with RUN-D.M.C. Shelia E., and the Fat Boys. In 2014, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.
